2022 Dressage and Jumping World Championships

2022 Dressage and Jumping World Championships

August 3 – 15, 2022 – Herning, Denmark

We are ready for the 2022 World Championships and excited about our first visit to Denmark’s Jutland Peninsula and to Herning.  Summer will be a wonderful time in Scandinavia and Herning has extensive experience with the World Cup and other major equestrian competitions.

We have comfortable accommodations just north of Herning, on a lake in Viborg, just a short walk to the town.  Because of the timing of the competitions, we will only have one day for sightseeing in Jutland. For those who wish, we will have a four-night pre-tour in Copenhagen.  Information on that will be forthcoming.

A word of precaution – the stadiums in Herning are small and they will not be expanding them. The main stadium has just 10,000 seats for Dressage and Show Jumping. (Aachen has in excess of 40,000). If you wish to join us, please make you reservation early. We will be purchasing tickets as reservations require.

Burghley Horse Trials 2020

Burghley Horse Trials

August 29 – September 7, 2020

The Burghley Horse Trials are the most consistent and challenging of the 5* events, as well as being visitor friendly. The setting, on the grounds of Burghley House, is magnificent and it is a walk to the village of Stamford, allowing for a very pleasant side visit, for those who wish.

You will find our accommodations, both at the Hotel Chesterfield in London and in Peterborough very pleasant indeed, and both very well located. The Bull Hotel in Peterborough, an old coaching inn in the middle of the town, is one we have enjoyed for many years.

As always, we have included sightseeing in London and Cambridge and Member’s admission to the Burghley Horse Trials.

Saturday, August 29: Usual Departure Day for London

Those traveling from the U.S. will depart today.  We recommend flights into and out of Heathrow.

Sunday, August 30:  Welcome to London

After the usual customs formalities, transfer into central London.  You will find several options, the best being the Heathrow Express train, non-stop to Paddington Station in 15-20 minutes.

On arrival at the St Ermin’s Hotel, check in and relax.  Rooms are usually available from 2pm.  There are several pubs in the neighborhood for lunch and Green Park and Piccadilly area shops and restaurants are nearby.  This 7:00 pm gather for drinks and dinner.

Monday, August 31:  London sightseeing at your leisure

Breakfast buffet is included each day of our program.  Tickets will be provided for you to enjoy hop on/hop off sightseeing of London and its principle sights at your leisure.  Stops include Parliament (a convenient starting point near our hotel) St. Paul’s, Cathedral, the Tower of London and many others.  (Buckingham Palace would be a good point to end your day, again quite nearby our hotel).  We have had excellent comments on this service.  I think you will enjoy it.

Tuesday, September 1:  Free time in London

The day is free to continue with your Hop on/Hop off sightseeing.  If you haven’t seen it, don’t miss the Changing of the Horse Guard at Whitehall, during your stay.  From there, you are a short walk from Piccadilly and the Tube lines to take you throughout London.

Wednesday, September 2: Depart for Cambridge and Peterborough

Depart for the university town of Cambridge for a delightful walking tour.  Meet our guide on arrival, and after a short break, tour the town and college area.  Some will be “punting on the Cam”, a favorite past time here in Cambridge. Time following our tour for lunch and shopping as you choose. This afternoon we continue to Peterborough and the Bull Hotel.  Dinner is included each evening of our stay.

Thursday, September 3: Dressage

Depart for Burghley for the first day of dressage.  Members have exclusive access to the North Stands for dressage on Thursday & Friday. Throughout the event enjoy the privileges of the Members tent, including closed circuit television where you will also be able to watch the event with commentary.  In addition, the Members area has its own bars, restaurants and their own loos.

Friday, September 4: Dressage Continues

Dressage continues today, with closed circuit TV in the Members’ Tent.  There are a wonderful variety of shops in the marketplace as well as other alternatives for food (nothing like a bacon bap and tea), but the Member’s Tent will offer the best place to sit and relax over lunch. Pim’s anyone?

Saturday, September 5: Cross Country

A 9:00 departure will allow you to be at your favorite fence as the first horse begins cross-country.  During rides of particular interest, you may want to be in the Members’ Tent or in the stands, where there will be XC jumps and a large screen to watch the entire ride. You will also find closed circuit TV and refreshments, at several points on course.  This has always been a consistently challenging course.

Sunday, September 6: Final Horse Inspection and Show Jumping

For your convenience, there will be two departures for Burghley this morning, one to get to the final horse inspection and another later for those choosing a more leisurely morning.  After the final presentation of prizes return to Peterborough for a drinks reception prior to dinner, celebrating a safe ride for all the horses & riders and perhaps some American success.

Monday, September 7: – Heathrow and Home

Early departure this morning will allow us to reach Heathrow for 9:30 or later flights.   The hotel will have a light breakfast laid out for us.

Rates per person: ____ Twin or ____ Double/Queen $2,795; ___ Single $3,495

Program includes: 8 nights hotels accommodations London and Peterborough, with breakfast daily, 2 receptions and 6 dinners; sightseeing in London and Cambridge; season tickets, Member’s admission and reserved seats for show jumping phase of the Burghley Horse Trials; transfers and transportation as outlined and services of Equestrian Tours Host.

Blair Castle Horse Trials 2021

Blair Castle Horse Trials 2021

August 21 (arrive Edinburgh August 22)– 30, 2021

Due to the combination of the city of Edinburgh during the Edinburgh Festival (including the Military Tattoo) and the setting for the Blair Castle Horse Trials in the Highlands of Scotland, this is one of my favorites programs.  Our three days in Edinburgh allows visits to the Castle, the now retired HMS Britannia, Holyrood House (the Queen’s Edinburgh residence) and allow us to enjoy a performance of the Tattoo.  It will also leave time for a stroll through the garden, take in the shops and other sights of the City.

We spend five in the Highlands, touring Blair Castle, home to the Dukes of Atholl, and enjoying the Blair Castle Horse Trials, in an absolutely beautiful setting.  I think you’ll very much enjoy our program and your travelling companions.

Saturday, August 21 – Depart for Edinburgh, Scotland

Usual departure day for North American clients. You’ll find convenient connections through Newark or London.

Sunday, August 22 – Welcome to Scotland

Clear customs on arrival.  We will arrange transfers for those who wish, with the driver meeting you at arrivals.  Join us this evening for a welcome cocktail reception in the lounge, followed by dinner here at the hotel.

Monday, August 23 – Edinburgh & The Castle

A Scottish buffet breakfast is included daily throughout our program.

Spend the next two days touring the city with your Royal Edinburgh sightseeing passes, which include admission to three of Edinburgh’s most important sites – Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyrood House and Royal Yacht Britannia.  Later today and on Tuesday you can continue exploring, visiting and perhaps enjoy tea on the Britannia.

During the next two nights don’t miss the opportunity to take in one of the performances available at the Edinburgh Festival or the very popular Fringe Festival, with shows throughout the city and buskers on the High Street.

Tuesday, August 24 – Edinburgh at Leisure

Today is free to continue exploring on the Edinburgh shuttles as you wish, perhaps including the HMS Britannia (I would suggest a morning visit, leaving time in the afternoon for the gardens, the museums or the shops of Edinburgh.

This evening we will attend the Tattoo, in the forecourt of the Castle, an unforgettable experience.

Wednesday, August 25 – Off to the Highlands and Blair Atholl

At 9:00 am we depart for the Highlands and Blair Atholl, stopping to visit in the rather remarkable Kelpies and have time for coffee.  Later continue to Pitlochry where there will be time for lunch.  This afternoon, visit the Edradour Distillery, the smallest in Scotland, for a tour and whisky tasting.

Then on to Blair Castle, home to the Dukes of Atholl. Later check into our accommodations at the nearby Atholl Arms.

Join us for drinks this evening prior to dinner (included each evening)

Thursday, August 26 – Day 1 of the Blair Castle Horse Trials

After our Scottish breakfast, transfer to Blair Atholl and the horse trials venue.  The Members tent has private dining and bar as well as a viewing area overlooking the dressage/show jumping ring.  Late afternoon we return to our accommodations.  For those who wish, there is rail service between Pitlochry and Blair Atholl.

Friday, August 27 – Dressage continues

Dressage continues today. Perhaps we can walk cross country course.  Enjoy the marketplace, with some 200 vendors.  The Member’s Tent is well organized and is adjacent to the dressage ring, with chairs on the grass.

Saturday, August 28 – Cross Country Day at Blair Castle

In addition to the very exciting cross country riding today, the Bruadar Country Fair offers demonstrations of traditional and modern country pursuits and displays and a local jumper show.

Sunday, August 29– Show Jumping Finals & the Fair Continues

We expect a later start today, giving time to enjoy the Fair before the final show jumping phase begins.  This evening we will gather for a reception prior to our farewell dinner.  (I think we should all be required to wear something tartan!)

Monday, August 30 – Early departure for Edinburgh and return flights home

We plan an early departure this morning to be at Edinburgh Airport in time for 9:30am flights.  The hotel will have refreshments laid out for us prior to departure. We wish you a safe journey home and look forward to seeing you again, soon.

2022 FEI Equestrian World Championships

2022 FEI Equestrian World Championships

Dressage and Show Jumping World Championships August 2022, Herning, Denmark

August 6 – 14, 2022, Herning, Denmark

We anticipate a 12 day program, depending on final competition schedule. There will be a 4-day pre-tour for those who wish, visiting Copenhagen and Zealand with castles, palaces and museums, including “Hamlet’s castle”, the Kronborg Slot.

Herning has been host to a number of major dressage and jumping competitions and is well suited, both with stadiums and hotel space, as a venue for the World Championships. It will be a pleasant train ride from Copenhagen to Jutland and Herning for the Championships.

I anticipate costs will be approximately $3,495 per person twin or double, $4,295 single.

Eventing & Driving World Championships September 2022, Pratoni, Italy

September 9 – 19, 2022

As the site of the 1998 World Equestrian Games and past venue for the FEI Eventing Nations Cup, Pratoni del Vivaro is a wonderful site for the 2022 Eventing and Driving World Championships.  We look forward to a return visit.

Here we plan to offer two programs – a 10 day program for the Eventing World Championships  only and a complete Eventing and Driving World Championships program.  In either case, we will be enjoying time exploring Rome, with a visit to the Colosseum and the Forum, Piazza Navona and the magnificent Pantheon.

AK42NW Three day event rider Frank Ostolt taking part in the Cross country Phase of the European Championships at Pratoni Italy. Image shot 2007. Exact date unknown.

I anticipate costs will be approximately $3,295 per person twin or double, $3,995 single.

As this will be the first time since 1986 that the various FEI World Championships have been separated, we are asking for early indications of interest so that we can prepare properly.  Your reservation, with an initial deposit of $250 will be fully refundable until 30 days after we provide our final program.  (I expect mid-summer 2020, depending of course, on the organizing committee for each program).

We look forward to 2022 and the FEI World Championships.  I do hope that you will join us.

Aachen Equestrian Festival 2021

Aachen Equestrian Festival 2021

June 26 (Arrive Dusseldorf June 27) – July 5, 2021

It is never too early to think about reserving for our Aachen Equestrian Festival program.  Season tickets regularly sell out nine to ten months in advance of the Festival, which is why we purchase our tickets a year or more in advance! In doing so we must limit our purchase to expected demand. We do sell out, so please don’t delay if you are interested.  Aachen is the finest equestrian competition offered anywhere in just about any given year.

The city of Aachen is inviting, historic and filled with friendly pubs and restaurants.  But you will be spending most of you time at the Aachen Festival venue as there are classes – Dressage or Jumping – every day and evening.  Our programs offer the option of Dressage season tickets (with jumping and opening ceremonies on Tuesday and Grand Prix of Aachen and closing ceremonies on Sunday) or Show Jumping season tickets (with the Grand Prix Freestyle on Sunday morning).

As always, we will be accommodated by our friends at the very well located Hotel Aquis Grana.  I believe this will mark our 18th year!

Our program will be the same as 2020, which is sold out at present. We have begun taking reservations for 2021 and look forward to another wonderful visit to Aachen.

Saturday, June 26

Depart for Germany & Aachen today.  Please arrange your flights to Dusseldorf which generally offers the best airfare and connections.

Sunday, June 27

We will arrange scheduled transfers from Dusseldorf Airport to our hotel during the day, with the last transfer at 2:30pm.  For those arriving later, there is rail transportation to Aachen from the airport, via Dusseldorf.

Enjoy the afternoon free to explore.  Perhaps enjoy a walk up to the Marktplatz, with the imposing Rathaus, and the pubs and restaurants with outdoor dining.  We look forward to seeing you this evening at our cocktail party, prior to dinner.

Monday, June 28

A buffet breakfast is included each morning. Today enjoy a walking tour of Aachen, once a Roman spa town, which still offers the “Aachen water”.  Later this morning visit the magnificent Cathedral, begun by Charlemagne.  Lunch at one of the Marktplatz pubs and this afternoon explore at leisure.

Tuesday, June 29

Walk to the Bushof together this morning.  This will give you an opportunity to see the stadium complex, the marketplace and the Deutsche Bank Stadium, the venue for Dressage.  The Opening Ceremonies are followed by a young horse jumping competition.

Wednesday, June 30

Today in the Deutsche Bank Stadium there will be a morning Prix St George and later a Grand Prix CDI 4*. A full day of jumping in the main stadium and Driving dressage phase begins in the Driving Stadium. The marketplace here has a wonderful selection of vendors and includes a wide selection of dining options.

Thursday, July 1

Because of the popularity of the Grand Prix CDIO 5*, it will be in the main stadium, most likely in the evening.  During the day there will be several jumping competitions, including the Nation’s Cup.  Driving dressage continues in the Driving Stadium.

Friday, July 2

The Deutsche Bank Stadium will be the site of Eventing dressage phase this morning.  Show Jumping continues in the main stadium, with the Eventing show jumping phase this evening as well.  Driving cone phase takes place in the Driving Stadium. The evening in the Deutsche Bank Stadium begins with FEI Intermediate II, a Quadrille Championship and the Grand Prix Special CDI 4*.

If you would like to do some exploring, you can take a bus to Maastricht, Holland, today, just 45 minutes away, and spend time visiting this really lovely city with great restaurants and shops.

Saturday, July 3

For Dressage, a very full day with a GP Special 5* and U-25 GP Freestyle.  The evening program features the Grand Prix Freestyle 4*.  In the adjacent park the Eventing cross country phase is followed by the marathon phase for the four-in-hand driving.  The main stadium will have several jumping competitions during the day.

Sunday, July 4

This is Grand Prix Day at the Aachen Festival with the Grand Prix Dressage of Aachen and the GP Freestyle CDIO in the Dressage stadium in the morning.  In the main stadium will be Grand Prix of Aachen/Show Jumping and the Farewell to Nations.  We have included tickets to both today.

This evening we will gather for a reception at our hotel followed by dinner at a lovely nearby restaurant.

Monday July 5

Farewell to Aachen today. We will arrange for a morning coach transfers to Dusseldorf Airport.

We are planning on a hotel within walking distance to the Scandinavium. Blenheim Palace Horse Trials

Blenheim Palace Horse Trials 2020

September 12 – 21, 2020

Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials
30 – Adam Trew (GBR) & Black Ink – CCI3* – Cross Country – The SsangYong Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials – 15th September 2018

We have always wanted to attend the Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials and find that staying in the lovely, nearby university town of Oxford will allow us to enjoy the colleges and history of that town and be quite close to Woodstock and Blenheim.  The Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials offer CCI4*, both Long and Short, in a setting overlooking the Palace that is still home to the 12th Duke of Marlborough.

We plan on 8 nights in Oxford with sightseeing to include the town and colleges, sites associated with Chief Inspector Morse and Harry Potter and a visit to the magnificent Blenheim Palace, home to the Duke of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. There enjoy the lovely grounds and gardens and visit Churchill’s nearby grave.

In Oxford you will find many fine restaurants and sites you can explore at your leisure. We hope you will join us.

Saturday, September 12

Usual departure day for North American clients.  Please plan on flying into Heathrow as we will have transfers arranged to Oxford. If you fly into Gatwick please plan on a 2 hour transfer to Heathrow.

Sunday, September 13

We will have a “collection point” at one of the airport hotels where you can enjoy a cup of coffee or have a proper breakfast (protein after an overnight flight is good for jet lag) and from there be transferred to Oxford and the Mercure Eastgate.

Today is free until our gathering this evening for a drink’s reception and dinner.

Monday, September 14

Begin our visit with a walking tour visiting several of the colleges, hopefully including Christ Church, and the Divinity School (used in the Potter films and others).  Our guide (and I) are fans of Chief Inspector Morse so we’ll touch on those sites as we enjoy the historic city. The afternoon will be free to explore at your leisure. With the Hop on-Hop off sightseeing coach.

Tuesday, September 15: Time in Oxford

Continue your exploration of Oxford today with your two-day sightseeing tickets.  There’s much to enjoy in Oxford.  Restaurants abound in town.

Wednesday, September 16: Visit the Duke of Marlborough’s Blenheim Palace

Blenheim Palace was a gift from Queen Anne and the nation to General John Churchill, the 1st Duke of Marlborough, for his military victories (including the Battle of Blenheim). The land extends to some 2000 acres and the private apartments give a hint of the ducal life. The interior is opulent.  While here, view the small chamber where Winston Churchill was born. Winston was cousin to the Duke. The gardens were the work of Capability Brown.

Later visit Churchill’s grave at the little church in nearby Bladen. Then to the picturesque village of Woodstock where you can lunch and explore the village. Late afternoon we return to Oxford.

Thursday – Friday, September 17 – 18: Let the Horse Trials Begin

Dressage on Thursday and Friday for the CCI4* Long and Short formats.  There will also be Riding Club Team challenges and Pony Club events, well worth watching.  The Blenheim Pavilion will have the usual “members” comforts with private bars, dining options and private loos.  The best viewing of competition in the Marlborough Ring will be from the lawn area of the Blenheim Pavilion.

Saturday, September 19: Cross Country and Show Jumping

The Blenheim Palace Horse Trials continue with cross country for the CCI4*L, while in the ring in front of the Blenheim Pavilion will be show jumping for the CCI4* S. We expect there will be coverage on closed circuit TV in the Pavilion.

Sunday, September 20: Cross Country and Show Jumping

Perhaps a later start today for the show jumping for the CCI4*L while the CIC4-S are doing their cross country. We will be organizing a lovely 3 course lunch in the Blenheim Pavilion restaurant, so be back from your wonderings so that you don’t miss it. Over the weekend there will also be fun events and shows. Sunday usually features the Master’s Challenge, with hunt masters and field masters competing over a fixed gate, a not unusual hunting obstacle. This evening we gather for a farewell drinks’ reception and dinner.

Aachen Equestrian Festival 2020

Aachen Equestrian Festival 2020

We have received the following message from the Aachen CHIO organizers.
“We sincerely hope that you and your family are safe and healthy. The corona crisis is putting us all under immense pressure and has completely turned our everyday lives upside down. We were so much looking forward to enjoying the CHIO Aachen 2020 together with you. However, unfortunately the current circumstances have changed everything: The World Equestrian Festival, CHIO Aachen, will not be able to take place as planned this year. The corona crisis is forcing us to cancel the event.”

Please consider joining us in 2021. We look forward to returning to Aachen at that time (June 25 – July 5, 2021).

Badminton Horse Trials – 2020

Badminton Horse Trials 2020 – Cancelled due to Corona Virus

We look forward to returning to Badminton in 2021.  Details will follow.

May 2 depart (arrive London May 3), return May 11, 2020

We have long enjoyed the Badminton Horse Trials and have taken quite a number of clients there over the years. Having had the experience, I think we put together a very nice program, I hope that as you read on, you will agree.

We will have time in London as there is always more to see.  The Hop-on, Hop off tour shuttle has proven hugely popular and in spite of my many visits (and I mean many) there are sights I have yet to visit.

Saturday, May 2:  Usual U.S. Departure Day for London

Those traveling from the U.S. will depart today.  We recommend flights into and out of Heathrow.

Sunday, May 3:  Welcome to London

Easy and speedy transfer into London on the Heathrow Express. On arrival at the St Ermin’s Hotel, check in and relax.  Light meals are available in the lounge and there are several pubs in the neighborhood.  You will also find Green Park and Piccadilly area shops and restaurants nearby.  Join us for drinks this evening in the Caxton Bar prior to dinner.

Monday, May 4: London sightseeing at your leisure

Breakfast buffet is included each day of our program.  Day tickets will be provided for you to enjoy sightseeing of London on Monday & Tuesday, enjoying its principle sights at your leisure on the Open Top Bus Tour shuttle, allowing you to get on and off at the various stops as you wish.  (We have had excellent comments on this service).

Tuesday, May 5:  Free time in London

The day is free to enjoy.  If you haven’t seen it, don’t miss the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace or the Horse Guard at Whitehall, both within easy walking distance. We will have the schedule in our final information letter. From there, you are a short walk to Piccadilly and the Tube lines to take you throughout London.  Enjoy your day.  Those wishing to enjoy an evening of London theatre should purchase tickets in advance.  There are a number of good on-line ticketing agencies.

Wednesday, May 6:  Off to Gloucestershire

Depart London this morning for Gloucestershire and Cirencester.  I thought it would be interesting to do a round about route to view the “White Horse”, cut into the turf, perhaps dating to the Iceni (1st or 2nd C BC).  At nearly 400 feet long, it is a notable landmark. Then on to Cirencester to deposit our bags and have time to lunch.

My hope is that we will be able to visit the gardens of Highgrove House, the home of Prince Charles & Camellia, Duchess of Cornwall this afternoon. The gardens are extensive.

We will gather for drinks in the bar prior to dinner this evening at the King’s Head. This hotel has been extensively refurbished and is now a solid 4-star hotel.

Thursday, May 7:  Badminton Dressage begins

To Badminton  this morning, private home to the Dukes of Beaufort, Masters of the Beaufort Hunt.  During the Badminton Horse Trials we will enjoy Member’s Privileges, with access to a restricted area which includes dining with a variety of offers, several bars, closed circuit television and a garden area overlooking the arena.  When you have time, the shops at Badminton are extensive.

Friday, May 8: Badminton Dressage & the Beaufort Kennels

Return to Badminton this morning as dressage continues at the Badminton Horse Trials.  We will be requesting a visit to the Beaufort Kennels, for those who wish, with an introduction to the hounds.  Such a visit is a “gift of the Master” and done with his permission only.  During one of the dressage days we can gather for a course walk.

Saturday, May 9:  Cross Country Day

Departure today to be settled on cross country well in advance of the first horse on course.  The Badminton Horse Trials course has always been one of the most challenging, going back to its beginning in 1949.  You will find refreshment tents on the course and you can always watch important rides in the Members tent.  There will be open seating in the main Grandstand, where there are usually several jumps.

Sunday, May 10:  Horse Inspection, Special Presentations & Final Show Jumping & Prizes

If the police are allowing traffic to depart Badminton this morning, we will have an early coach departure for those wishing to take in the Horse inspection as well as a later departure.  Breakfast will be offered in the Member’s Tent.  In addition to the Show Jumping, there will be special presentations, band performances and a presentation of the Beaufort Hounds.

This evening we gather for a farewell reception to the Badminton Horse Trials prior to dinner here at the hotel.

Monday, May 11:  Depart for Heathrow & Home

We have an early start today to get us to Heathrow by 7:00 in time for 9:30 (or later) flights.  We are requesting that the hotel have a light breakfast available for us, so that you will be somewhat fortified before we depart.  Those departing from Gatwick should plan on a two-hour transfer from Heathrow and should not plan on flights earlier than 11:30.

Costs per person: $2,795 twin or double basis; $3,895 single basis

Program includes: 3 Nights London; 5 nights Cirencester; breakfast daily, 3 receptions and 3 dinners; London sightseeing, admissions and other sightseeing as outlined, admission and Member’s privileges at the Badminton Horse Trials and members seating for dressage reserved seating for show jumping; transfers, transportation as outlined and services of an Equestrian Tours host.
