Our Plans for 2020 and Beyond

Upcoming Years 2020 and Beyond

We enjoy looking ahead and planning our future programs, hopefully destinations and equestrian events that will interest and excite you.  There are major competitions and places we haven’t seen as of yet and others that really deserve a return visit and an opportunity for new Equestrian Tours travelers to explore with us. Our plans include …

Badminton Horse Trials – Anticipated dates: May 2 – 11, 2020

It has been several years since we have taken in the Badminton Horse Trials, set on the grounds of the Duke of Beaufort’s estate.  As always, our program will include Member’s privileges, with the Member’s tent providing private bars and dining options as well as closed circuit television (great on XC day), reserved seats for show jumping and perhaps a chance to visit the Beaufort Kennels (pending Master’s approval).

In 2020 we plan on spending 8 nights in the Cotswolds, allowing time to visit in the area, including a planned visit to the gardens at Highgrove House, home of Prince Charles and Lady Camellia. (Gardens are open during the week on a limited basis).

Aachen Equestrian Festival – Anticipated dates: July 11 – 20, 2020

The Aachen Equestrian Festival or CHIO as they call it locally, is the finest equestrian event held annually anywhere! Each year it offers Nations Cup Dressage, Show Jumping and Driving, as well as a 3* horse trial.

Because of the popularity of the festival, we purchase our tickets the day they go on sale and therefore have a very limited capacity on our program. We encourage those interested to reserve early.  We offer the option of either Dressage season tickets, with opening ceremonies and jumping on Tuesday and closing ceremonies on Sunday with the Grand Prix of Aachen; or Show Jumping season tickets with the Dressage Freestyle on Sunday morning.  It either case you have access to all phases of the Eventing and Driving competitions.

Blenheim Palace Horse Trials – Anticipated dates: September 12 – 21, 2020

1 – Nicolai Aldinger (GER) & Tactic – CCI3* – Dressage – CCI3* – The SsangYong Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials – 13th September 2018

We have always wanted to attend the Horse Trials at Blenheim Palace, home to the Duke of Marlborough and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.  The home and grounds create a magnificent setting for the event. We plan on touring the Palace and extensive grounds prior to the event.

Our accommodations will be in nearby Oxford, where we will also have a chance to visit the colleges and town (home of “Chief Inspector Morse”).  As usual we will be including member’s privileges (referred to as the Marlborough Pavilion here at Blenheim) where there are wonderful views of the Palace, breakfast & lunch offered and private bars and loos and closed-circuit television.

Dressage & Show Jumping World Cup, Gothenburg, Sweden – March 27 – April 6, 2021

We had a wonderful time in 2018 at the World Cup in Paris and Gothenburg offers a chance to enjoy another great city and the exciting Dressage & Show Jumping World Cup. 2021 happens to be the 400th anniversary of the founding of Gothenburg, so there will be lots of special activities.  It is a beautiful city with stately buildings, museums and parks.  In addition to the World Cup competition, we will have time to explore and enjoy the area.

Aachen Equestrian Festival – Anticipated dates: July 10 – 19, 2021

We intend to return to the Aachen Festival in 2021. It is an annual event for us that we look forward to with great anticipation.

Burghley Horse Trials 2019

Burghley Horse Trials

August 31 – September 9 2019

I find the Burghley Horse Trials the most consistent and challenging of the 4* events, as well as being visitor friendly.  Plus, it is a walk from the village of Stamford, allowing for a very pleasant side visit.

This year we have opted for up-graded rooms at the Bull Hotel in Peterborough, so we will have modern, very comfortable rooms in an old coaching inn in the middle of the town.  You’ll find the accommodations, both at the St Ermin’s in London and in Peterborough very pleasant indeed, and both very well located.

As always, we have included sightseeing in London and Cambridge and Member’s admission to the Burghley Horse Trials.

Saturday, August 31: Usual Departure Day for London

Those traveling from the U.S. will depart today.  We recommend flights into and out of Heathrow.

Sunday, September 1:  Welcome to London

After the usual customs formalities, transfer into central London.  You will find several options, the best being the Heathrow Express train, non-stop to Paddington Station in 15-20 minutes.

On arrival at the St Ermin’s Hotel, check in and relax.  Rooms are usually available from 2pm.  There are several pubs in the neighborhood for lunch and Green Park and Piccadilly area shops and restaurants are nearby.  This 7:00 pm gather for drinks and dinner.

Monday, September 2:  London sightseeing at your leisure

Breakfast buffet is included each day of our program.  Tickets will be provided for you to enjoy hop on/hop off sightseeing of London and its principle sights at your leisure.  Stops include Parliament (a convenient starting point near our hotel) St. Paul’s, Cathedral, the Tower of London and many others.  (Buckingham Palace would be a good point to end your day, again quite nearby our hotel).  We have had excellent comments on this service.  I think you will enjoy it.

Tuesday, September 3:  Free time in London

The day is free to continue with your Hop on/Hop off sightseeing.  If you haven’t seen it, don’t miss the Changing of the Horse Guard at Whitehall, during your stay.  From there, you are a short walk from Piccadilly and the Tube lines to take you throughout London.

Wednesday, September 4: Depart for Cambridge and Peterborough

Depart for the university town of Cambridge for a delightful walking tour.  Meet our guide on arrival, and after a short break, tour the town and college area.  Some will be “punting on the Cam”, a favorite past time here in Cambridge. Time following our tour for lunch and shopping as you choose. This afternoon we continue to Peterborough and the Bull Hotel.  Dinner is included each evening of our stay.

Thursday, September 5: Dressage

Depart for Burghley for the first day of dressage.  Members have exclusive access to the North Stands for dressage on Thursday & Friday. Throughout the event enjoy the privileges of the Members tent, including closed circuit television where you will also be able to watch the event with commentary.  In addition, the Members area has its own bars, restaurants and their own loos.

Friday, September 6: Dressage Continues

Dressage continues today, with closed circuit TV in the Members’ Tent.  There are a wonderful variety of shops in the marketplace as well as other alternatives for food (nothing like a bacon bap and tea), but the Member’s Tent will offer the best place to sit and relax over lunch. Pim’s anyone?

Saturday, September 7: Cross Country

A 9:00 departure will allow you to be at your favorite fence as the first horse begins cross-country.  During rides of particular interest, you may want to be in the Members’ Tent or in the stands, where there will be XC jumps and a large screen to watch the entire ride. You will also find closed circuit TV and refreshments, at several points on course.  This has always been a consistently challenging course.

Sunday, September 8: Final Horse Inspection and Show Jumping

For your convenience, there will be two departures for Burghley this morning, one to get to the final horse inspection and another later for those choosing a more leisurely morning.  After the final presentation of prizes return to Peterborough for a drinks reception prior to dinner, celebrating a safe ride for all the horses & riders and perhaps some American success.

Monday, September 9: – Heathrow and Home

Early departure this morning will allow us to reach Heathrow for 9:30 or later flights.   The hotel will have a light breakfast laid out for us.

Rates per person: ____ Twin or ____ Double/Queen $2,795; ___ Single $3,495

Program includes: 8 nights hotels accommodations London and Peterborough, with breakfast daily, 2 receptions and 6 dinners; sightseeing in London and Cambridge; season tickets, Member’s admission and reserved seats for show jumping phase of the Burghley Horse Trials; transfers and transportation as outlined and services of Equestrian Tours Host.

Tatersalls Irish Horse Trials

Tattersalls Irish Horse Trials

May 24 – June 3, 2019

I am delighted to be returning to Ireland and to be making our first visit to the Tattersalls Irish Horse Trials – 2019. Because there is so much to enjoy in Dublin, we are planning four nights in the city, with Dublin sightseeing including the Castle and Trinity College, the National Stud and lovely adjacent Japanese Gardens. Perhaps an evening enjoying true Irish music and a pint or two.

The Stone of Destiny, Tara Hill

There are wonderful ruins and ancient sites to be found as we travel to Dunboyne and our accommodations for the Tattersall Ireland Horse Trials. We plan to take in the Newgrange Mound and Knowth, the Hill at Tara, and Bective Abbey ruin. It will be an interesting introduction to a bit of ancient and medieval Ireland before we settle into our Dunboyne Castle accommodations and enjoy the event, quite nearby.

Friday, May 24 – Depart for Dublin

Usual North American departures today for Dublin. You will find many connecting flights direct to Dublin from a variety of U.S. cities.

Saturday, May 25- Welcome to Ireland and Dublin

On arrival transfer into Dublin and to our accommodations at the Hotel Riu Plaze (the Gresham Dublin). We intend to organize transfers for those who wish. Our hotel is located quite near O’Connell Street, just blocks from the Liffey. Shops and restaurants are to be found throughout the area.

On arrival, check in and relax. This evening, gather for cocktails prior to our welcome dinner.

Sunday, May 26 – Walking Tour and Independent Sightseeing

We begin our visit with a walking tour of historic Dublin, visiting Trinity College and Dublin Castle. This afternoon and on Monday you will have tickets for the Hop On – Hop Off shuttle tour of Dublin allowing you to get to all of the sights.

Monday, May 27- Independent Sightseeing, Dublin

One of the shuttle stops is quite near our hotel, convenient for both beginning and ending your day. Some stops you may wish to consider are St Patrick’s Cathedral, and Christ’s Church Cathedral, the Guinness Storeroom, a major visitor attraction, Temple Bar and Merrion Square. Enjoy your day.

Tuesday, May 28 – The Irish National Stud and Japanese Gardens

Just an hour from Dublin is the Irish National Stud and adjacent Japanese Gardens. The farm here at Tully has been a famous racing stud since the early 20th-c and became the Irish National Stud in 1945. Stallions standing today are primarily hunt race horses and are available at a reasonable fee to Irish breeders. They also take a interest in preserving the purebred Irish draught. After our visit here, lunch in the Japanese Garden restaurant (an Irish menu) and have time to enjoy the magnificent gardens before we return to Dublin.

I would suggest, now that you have had time to adjust after your international flight, that you perhaps search out a pub with particularly good music. They abound in the city and we might have a suggestion or two.

Wednesday, May 29 – Into the Country to Dunboyne

Depart this morning and travel north to the mound at Newgrange where, according to lore, the legendary Kings of Tara were buried, though Newgrange predates them as it was built around 3200 BC. It was rebuilt in the 60’s and restored as closely as possible to its original state. Nearby in the mound at Knowth, occupied for a longer period than Newgrange, the site contains the greatest concentration of megalithic art in Europe.

There will be time for lunch nearby, then continue to the ruins of Bective Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1147. Nearby is the Hill of Tara, the political and spiritual center of Celtic Ireland until the 11th-c. The site contains the Royal Enclosure, a hill fort and the Stone of Destiny.

Later arrive at the Dunboyne Castle hotel for five nights. Perhaps we’ll gather in the bar before dinner. Breakfast and dinner are included each day.

Thursday, May 30- The Tattersall Ireland Horse Trials Begin

Enjoy your Irish breakfast each morning. Transfer to the nearby Tattersalls Ireland Horse Trials site this morning. The event includes many competition levels up to 3-star, with dressage today. The site includes a large marketplace and we can enjoy the Members Tent overlooking the main arena. You will find several pubs in the village of Dunboyne, if you wish a enjoy some local flavor this evening.

Friday, May 31 – Horse Trials, Marketplace, Dressage and Cross Country Begins

Dressage continues today as well as cross country. The marketplace includes a sampling of Irish made goods and a variety of food options. I am confident that the Members Tent will include its own bars and dining and a seating area overlooking the Main Ring.

Saturday, June 1 – Dressage and Cross Country Continue and Dog Shows at the Fair

There will be children’s rides and dog shows today and Sunday and also Cross Country. Closed circuit television will be available in the Members Tent and at several of the bars and pavilions on the property so no need to miss the excitement.

Sunday, June 2 – Final Show Jumping

Perhaps a relaxing day today, with a later start depending on the program. Enjoy the comforts of the Member’s area as you take in the show jumping and final prize giving. On return to Dunboyne, time to freshen up before we gather for cocktails and our final dinner before departure.

Monday, June 3 – To Dublin and Return

We plan on arriving Dublin Airport by 6:30 in time flights from 9:00 onwards. We will request an early breakfast be available before our departure. (It is a 20 minute journey to Dublin Airport).

Rates & inclusions:

World Equestrian Games 2018 Pre-Tour

FEI World Equestrian Games™ Tryon 2018 Pre-Tour

Savannah & Charleston
September 2 – 9, 2018

The World Equestrian Games are a great opportunity to explore a new part of the country or the world, if you can take the time.  With the 2018 WEG in North Carolina it’s an opportunity to visit a bit of the American South.

As it happens, Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina have recently been named the two most beautiful cities in the South. I have had the pleasure of spending time in both cities, exploring the sights and enjoying the fine dining they have to offer. If you haven’t had the opportunity to explore this area, I hope you will join us.

Charleston

If you are joining us by air, make your arrangements to fly in to Savannah, GA and your departure at the end of your WEG visit from Asheville Regional Airport.

Schedule

Sunday, September 2, 2018 – Welcome to Savannah

On arrival, transfer to our hotel, the Hotel Andaz in Savannah, quite near the river and the shops and squares, the city is so well known for. Relax and explore this afternoon and this evening we will gather for drinks and dinner and meet your travelling companions.

Savannah
Monday, September 3 – Hello Savannah

We have included breakfast every day of our program. Your introduction to Savannah will begin with a 2-hour walking tour of the city, a city of garden squares and wonderful antebellum architecture. Our tour will end with our lunch stop, and this afternoon and on Tuesday, you will have Savannah Trolley tickets to continue exploring the beautiful city as you wish.

Tuesday, September 4 – Savannah at leisure

Free day to continue your visits.  The first trolley stop is quite near our hotel.  Be sure to get to the Riverfront Plaza, along the Savannah River.  We have included tickets to the Owen-Thomas House, owned and maintained by the Telfair Museum, one of the finest museum houses in Savannah.

Wednesday, September 5 –  Depart for Beaufort & Charleston

The city of Beaufort (Bew-fort) is the second oldest in South Caroline, and a lovely place to visit.  We will stop here, in route to Charleston, and while on the island, visit Gullah sites as well. The Gullah people are descendants of freed slaves, and like their slave ancestors, keep the Gullah language and traditions alive.  An interesting afternoon, with time to visit the shops as you wish.

On arrival in Charleston, check in to the Mills House Hotel, just a few blocks from the Cooper (Cupper) River and the harbor.  This has always been my favorite Charleston hotel.  I hope you enjoy it.  This evening is free.  You will find the Charleston has numerous wonderful restaurants, large and small, with a great variety of offerings.

Thursday, September 6 – Charleston & Historic Homes

Our guide will introduce us to historic Charleston this morning on our walking tour.  You’ll be introduced to the Charleston single house and “joggling boards”, as well as some of the many historic homes and lovely gardens. If you recall the book and operetta “Porky & Bess”, Catfish Row was here in Charleston.

The afternoon is free to continue exploring.   Perhaps you’ll choose a harbor cruise or visit to Ft. Sumpter.  Whatever you do, don’t miss a visit to the Old Slave Market where you’ll find ladies weaving seagrass baskets (I have one that’s 18 years old) and lots of shops.

Friday, September 7 – Historic Homes & Ashley River Plantations

After breakfast this morning visit two of Charleston’s loveliest houses. The Edmundston-Alston House dates to 1825 and is a lovely Greek Revival. The Nathaniel Russell House is famous for its “free flying” staircase going up three stories. The ornate interior of this 1808 house contains much Charleston made furniture.  Enjoy the gardens as well.

Returning to the hotel, board our coach for a trip to Middleton Place Plantation, where we will lunch, visit the house and have time to enjoy the oldest landscaped gardens in America.  The “house” that we see today is just one wing, the “South flanker” of the original residential complex, the main residence having been destroyed in the Civil War.  After our house tour, feel free to visit the stable yards before we depart for Drayton Hall.

Drayton Hall is a Palladian style plantation house and the only one on the Ashley River to have survived the Civil War intact.  It is wonderful piece of architecture left unfurnished to show off its interior work.

Drayton Hall

Late afternoon we return to our comfortable digs, perhaps relax in the lounge before you evening activities.

Saturday, September 8 – Free Time in Charleston

A leisurely day, perhaps a late breakfast and explore as you wish.  St Michael’s Church is the oldest in Charleston and worth a visit.  The Battery offers wonderful view of the harbor. There are gardens to explore (the tradition here is if the garden gate is open, you are welcome to come in and enjoy) as well as other historic houses and museums we haven’t touched on.

This evening we will get together for a reception and dinner, as tomorrow we depart for Asheville for the World Equestrian Games to join our other WEG friends.

Sunday, September 9 – Off Today for Asheville, NC

Enjoy a leisurely morning and time to lunch here in Charleston before we depart at 1pm.  We will proceed directly to Asheville for the World Equestrian Games, arriving at approximately 5:30, with time to check in, freshen up and be ready for our welcome reception & dinner at 7pm.

Rates per person:

Twin or Double basis $2,395  Single basis 3,295

Includes:

7 Nights’ hotel accommodations with breakfast daily, 2 lunches and two receptions and dinners; sightseeing, admissions and transportation as outlined, taxes and gratuities for included features and services of Equestrian Tours host throughout.

Dressage World Cup – Paris

Dressage & Show Jumping World Cup – Paris

April 7 – April 16, 2018

REGISTRATION NOW CLOSED

April, what a great time to be in Paris!  With the World Equestrian Games being held in the U.S. in 2018, here’s a chance to take a European trip and enjoy Paris for the Dressage & Show Jumping World Cup.

Our hotel is the Mercure Paris Bercy, which we selected for its convenience to the Accor Arena, venue for the 2018 Dressage World Cup in Paris.  The Arena is as close as a walk across the Seine.  We have included both the Dressage & Show Jumping season tickets in our program.

Our competition schedule is based on the 2017 program as the 2018 schedule is not yet available. We will, of course adjust our program should the schedule be different.  We very much hope that you can join us.

Saturday, April 7 – Departure Day for our American & Canadian Friends

Usual departure day today, unless you are spending time in Europe prior to our program.

Sunday, April 8 – Welcome to Paris

Springtime in Paris, the gardens, the boats on the Seine, the flowers covering the slopes of the Accor Arena should all make for a wonderful welcome. You can get to our hotel by the Roissy Bus to the Opera then taxi (suggested), by taxi directly or by metro (it’s adjacent to the Quai de la Gare Metro stop).

The afternoon is free to explore.  This evening, gather for cocktails and dinner, nearby.

Monday, April 9 – The Chateau Chantilly

Breakfast buffet is included each day of our stay.

A lovely day today as we travel to Chantilly to visit the Chateau Chantilly, the former home of the Duke of Aumale.  Here you will find the most extraordinary stables, dating from 1721 and magnificent 19th-c, chateau.  The stables include The Living Museum of the Horse. The Chateau contains a collection of paintings, sculpture and furniture.  It is all in a beautiful setting, as you would expect, surrounded by lakes.

On our return to Paris, you will find a Metro stop very near our hotel should you wish to explore the Bastille, the Opera or other areas of Paris during your stay.

Tuesday, April 10, 2018 – A Day Spent Enjoying Paris

As we are, for all practical purposes, on the river, we will make use of the Seine River shuttle hop on/hop off cruise, allowing you to enjoy a river cruise, getting off at any of nine departure points to enjoy various Paris sights.

Wednesday, 11 April – Dressage World Cup Warm-up Day

The 2018 Dressage World Cup begins with warm-ups this afternoon.  We will advise actual schedule when it becomes available.  As you will have time each day to explore, I suggest a five-day Metro pass which will take care of your Paris visits through Sunday.

You will find the Accor Arena just across the Seine from our hotel, perhaps a ten-minute walk, with lovely views. In between competitions, you will find numerous restaurants in the area, for lunch or dinner.

Thursday, 12 April – Dressage World Cup Gran Prix and Show Jumping Speed Class

The morning will be free, perhaps for a visit to one of the sights of Paris.  Metro from our hotel and return directly to the Accor Arena.

This afternoon, we expect the World Cup Dressage Grand Prix and in the evening, the Show Jumping Speed class.

Friday, April 13 – Dressage Showcase and Show Jumping Gran Prix Final

Morning is free.  We expect a mid-afternoon start for the Dressage Showcase, so you will have time to perhaps visit one of the many museums.

This evening is the World Cup Show Jumping Grand Prix Final II.

Saturday, April 14 – Dressage Freestyle & International Gran Prix Jumping

We expect a late start today, perhaps mid-afternoon, allowing time visiting.

This afternoon there will be the Dressage World Cup GP Final Freestyle determining the FEI World Cup winner.  This evening, International Grand Prix Jumping.  It should be a very exciting day.

Sunday, April 15 – FEI World Cup Jumping Final

Today is the Grand Prix Jumping Final III, for the FEI World Cup, beginning mid-afternoon.

This evening I am planning a special dinner.  Please plan on joining us.

Monday, April 16 – Departures for Charles de Galle Airport

For your convenience, we are planning a coach transfer to CDG for your departing flights.

Bon voyage

Blair Castle Horse Trials & Scottish Country Fair 2017

Blair Castle Horse Trials & Scottish Country Fair

BlairTop

August 19 (arrive Edinburgh August 20)– 28, 2017

Due to the combination of the city of Edinburgh during the Edinburgh Festival (including the Military Tattoo performed in front of the Castle) and the setting for the Blair Castle Horse Trials in the Highlands of Scotland, this is one of my favorites programs.  Our three days in Edinburgh allows visits to the Castle, the now retired HMS Britannia, Holyrood House (the Queen’s Edinburgh residence) and allow us to enjoy a performance of the Tattoo.  It will also leave time for a stroll through the garden, enjoy the shops and other sights of the City.

We spend five in the Highlands, touring Blair Castle, home to the Dukes of Atholl, and enjoying the Blair Castle Horse Trials, in an absolutely beautiful setting.  I think you’ll very much enjoy our program and your travelling companions.

Saturday, August 19 – Depart for Edinburgh, Scotland

Usual departure day for North American clients. You’ll find convenient connections through Newark or London.

Sunday, August 20 – Welcome to Scotland

Clear customs on arrival.  We will arrange transfers for those who wish, with the driver meeting you at arrivals.  Join us this evening for a welcome cocktail reception in the lounge, followed by dinner here at the hotel.

Monday, August 21 – Edinburgh & The Castle

A Scottish buffet breakfast is included daily throughout our program.

Spend the next two days touring the city with your Royal Edinburgh sightseeing passes, which include admission to three of Edinburgh’s most important sites – Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyrood House and Royal Yacht Britannia.  Later today and on Tuesday you can continue exploring, visiting and perhaps enjoy tea on the Britannia.

Tuesday, August 22 – Edinburgh at Leisure

Today is free to continue exploring on the Edinburgh shuttles as you wish, perhaps including the HMS Britannia (I would suggest a morning visit, leaving time in the afternoon for the gardens, the museums or the shops of Edinburgh.

This evening we will attend the Tattoo, in the forecourt of the Castle.

Wednesday, August 23 – Off to the Highlands and Blair Atholl

At 9:00 am we depart for Blair Atholl, stopping to visit in the rather remarkable Kelpies and have time for coffee.  Later continue to Pitlochry where there will be time for lunch.  This afternoon visit the Edradour Distillery, the smallest in Scotland, for a tour and tasting.

Then on to Blair Castle, home to the Dukes of Atholl. Later check into our accommodations at the nearby Atholl Arms.

About Asheville,

Asheville is a lively small city in the Blue Ridge.  It is a summer get-away spot in the cool mountains and has developed as a center for the handmade arts and crafts of the region with 4000 craftspeople, numerous artists, a wonderful collection of restaurants, an active night life and a large selection of craft beer pubs.  We hope you enjoy your free evenings exploring the city.

Sunday, September 9 – Welcome to Asheville!

If you are flying in, please arrive at Asheville (AVL) Airport.  We will have transfers scheduled until late afternoon.  If you are driving, you will find the Renaissance provides convenient parking.  On arrival at the Asheville Renaissance, please check in at the front desk, then see us at the Equestrian Tours Welcome Desk. This evening join us for our welcome reception, followed by a delightful dinner and introduction to our program.

Monday, September 10 – Introduction to Asheville and the Blue Ridge Mountains

Breakfast is included each day of your stay.  You will find the breakfast buffet, with eggs cooked to order, quite extensive. You may also have room service breakfast, if you wish.

An introductory tour of Asheville this morning, stopping at the River Arts District with time to explore. Then travel along the Blue Ridge Parkway, seeing what brought so many people to the area, and to Grandfather Mountain.  Lunch here (included) and have time to walk the bridge to the top of Grandfather Mountain.  The views are spectacular.  Returning to our Asheville accommodations, stop at the Folk Art Center, with its display of crafts of the Southern Appalachians and a lovely gift shop. Late afternoon return to Asheville.

We will have a visit to Biltmore House and Gardens this evening.  Built by George Vanderbilt in the late 19-c., Biltmore is the largest private home in the U.S., with 250 rooms, and is certainly one of the most beautiful.

Proceed to Biltmore from the Opening Ceremonies, where we can have a “private opening”, following which enjoy a wine & cheese reception, just adjacent to the house.  Biltmore produces quite pleasant wines. This will be a memorable evening.

Tuesday, September 11 – TIEC for Opening Ceremonies

Morning at leisure.  The opening ceremonies are scheduled for 2:00pm, but I would like you to have time to explore, so we will depart at 11:00am for the Tryon International Equestrian Center.  Have time for lunch and visit the market place, get the layout of the various stadiums and you’ll be ready for the coming week.

Wednesday, September 12 – Dressage, Reining & Endurance Championships

Parking will be away from the competition site and there will be shuttles.  Hopefully, coaches will be allowed to deposit passengers directly at the competition site, saving an unnecessary morning shuttle.  Evening shuttles will bring you back to the collection point to join our coach and return to Asheville. We anticipate the Endurance Championships will be ending in the Main stadium and the first medals of the 2018 WEG will be presented.  Our final coaches will depart following the medals ceremony.

Thursday, September 13 – Dressage, Reining and Eventing Dressage Phase

Today the Eventing Championships begin with the dressage phase; the Dressage and Reining Championships continue.  If the past is any indication, today should be the completion of Dressage Grand Prix Team Championships and the individual qualifying, as well as Reining.

Friday, September 14 – Dressage and Eventing Dressage Continue

Reiner’s and their horses have a rest day today; Eventing dressage continues today and Dressage Championships continue, we expect with the GP Special .

I would expect that the Dressage scheduled for today will be the Freestyle and it will be scheduled for the morning with the final Eventing show jumping phase and medals presentations in the afternoon.

This evening return to our Asheville accommodations and have time to freshen up before our farewell drinks reception with what I hope are sufficient hors d’oeuvres that no one will feel the need for dinner.  It will be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy old friends and new before many of you return home tomorrow.

Monday, September 17 – Week I Departure

Today is departure day for our Week I guests.  There will be scheduled airport transfers this morning. If you are driving home, be safe.  Hope you all will join us again soon.

Throughout your stay here at The Renaissance, we have included breakfast each day.  You will find the breakfast buffet quite extensive. You may also have room service breakfast, if you wish.

This is the only day that we can introduce you to the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Craft Center. There will be a coach going to the WEG site today for those who wish to take in the Para-Dressage & Vaulting. Others my wish to join us as we travel along the Blue Ridge Parkway, seeing what brought so many people to the area, and to Grandfather Mountain.  Lunch here (included) and time to walk the bridge over the valley to the top of Grandfather Mountain.  The views are specular.  We hope for a clear day. Returning down the Parkway, stop at the Folk Art Center, with its display of crafts of the Southern Appalachians and a lovely gift shop. I anticipate returning to Asheville late afternoon.  Those who spent the day at the WEG venue will have to return by 5pm in order to freshen up and join us for our planned evening activity – not to be missed.

We have planned a visit to Biltmore House and Gardens this evening.  Built by Frederick Vanderbilt in the late 19-c., Biltmore is the largest private home in the U.S., with 250 rooms, and is certainly one of the most beautiful.  We will depart the hotel at 5:30 for Biltmore, where we can have a “private opening”, following which we can enjoy a wine & cheese reception, just adjacent to the house. Biltmore produces quite pleasant wines. This will be a memorable evening.

Following the medal presentations and closing ceremonies, return to Asheville.  You should have time to freshen up before our farewell drinks reception.  It will be a wonderful opportunity to visit with old friends and new before you return home tomorrow.
